Essential oils: safe use in beauty
Share
Essential oils are true gems of nature, offering powerful properties for health and beauty. However, their use requires precautions to ensure their effectiveness and avoid any risks. At FATMEY, we encourage the informed and safe use of these botanical treasures.
1. Always dilute essential oils
Essential oils are highly concentrated and should never be applied neat to the skin, except in rare cases and under professional advice. Dilution is essential to avoid irritation, burns, or allergic reactions.
How to dilute:
- Use a carrier oil (jojoba oil, sweet almond, argan, coconut, etc.).
- For facial use, a dilution of 0.5% to 1% is generally sufficient (1 to 2 drops of essential oil for 10 ml of vegetable oil).
- For the body, you can go up to 2% to 5% (4 to 10 drops per 10 ml of vegetable oil).
2. Perform a skin test
Before applying a new essential oil to a large area of your skin, always perform a patch test.
- Apply a small amount of your diluted mixture to an inconspicuous area of your skin (for example, the crease of your elbow or behind your ear).
- Wait 24 to 48 hours.
- If no reaction (redness, itching, irritation) appears, you can use it safely.
3. Specific precautions for certain oils
Some essential oils have specific properties that require additional precautions:
- Photosensitizing oils: Citrus oils (lemon, bergamot, sweet orange, grapefruit) can make skin sensitive to the sun and cause spots or burns. Avoid sun exposure after application or use only in the evening.
- Dermocaustic oils: Some oils (cinnamon, clove, oregano) are very irritating to the skin. They must be used with very high dilution and with the utmost caution.
- Pregnant women and children: The use of essential oils is often discouraged or highly regulated for pregnant and breastfeeding women and young children. Consult a healthcare professional before use.
4. Conservation and quality
To preserve the properties of your essential oils, store them in a cool, dark, and dry place, in their original tinted glass bottle, tightly closed. Be sure to purchase pure, chemotyped, and organic essential oils to ensure their effectiveness and safety.
By following these basic rules, you can fully enjoy the wonderful benefits of essential oils in your natural beauty routine, in complete safety.
